King's Bruton School

Independent school in South West UK

"There’s such a wide range of options available to students, and often those opportunities are spread out across the web, badly presented, and difficult to compare. Unifrog brings everything together in a really smart interface."

Introducing Unifrog to King’s Bruton

“Often the key to making the most out of an external service is in selling it effectively to all teachers - and the team at Unifrog clearly know that. Tom, our Area Manager, presented Unifrog to our staff and trained them in using the tools. He did an excellent job, so much so that we were proficient enough in it to introduce the platform to the students ourselves! To aid us we used the detailed ‘how to’ resources available on the Unifrog website - videos and powerpoints covering every aspect of the platform.”

Unifrog’s impact

“There’s such a wide range of options available to students, and often those opportunities are spread out across the web, badly presented, and difficult to compare. Unifrog brings everything together in a really smart interface. For example, by asking students to input their best possible grades they get a realistic look at the places they should be aspiring to go to, without feeling limited to just one pathway.

For teachers the intuitive layout of the platform makes it so much easier for tutors to visualise each of their students’ progress. For example, the traffic light system for showing whether students have completed certain important tasks in their university applications is a godsend for busy teachers.”

References

“The References tools have made a cumbersome process much easier. Tutors who have to write Overall References have really appreciated being able to quickly see which students have all of their Subject References completed. Personally, I love the fact that the tutors can nudge their colleagues who are late in finishing the Subject References! It means that I as a manager can watch the process trundling along, I don’t have to push things forward every step of the way.”

Students

“It’s been a very intuitive system for the students. They like being able to shortlist both universities and apprenticeships in one place, and they find that the information Unifrog presents them about different opportunities is really clearly laid out.

This is our first year using Unifrog, and we’ve only been using it with our Year 13 students; from next year we want to implement it with Year 12s, and eventually also down into KS4 and even KS3. Unifrog is a one-stop-shop for destinations and we want to take advantage of that.”

Competencies

“To be honest I was expecting the Competencies tool to be an unhelpful gimmick, but it’s one of the greatest strengths of the platform.

The way it is divided into categories like “Leadership” and “Resilience” helps some of our less confident students to realise that they’ve achieved more than they thought.

It came into its own when we started the Personal Statement process. Students often find the blank page of an un-started Personal Statement off-putting, and the Competenices tool gives them a treasure trove to pick from.

I also hadn’t anticipated the overlap with the CV tool. By encouraging students to consider the skills they’ve gained, when they come to write about their work experience and other interests they can relate them to their applications more naturally. Especially for our BTEC students, who need to write a CV is a part of their course, the Competencies tool is really helpful.”
